Split

The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona, where he wanted to spend the last years of his life. During these 1700 years the Palace slowly turned into a city, which to this day lures with its rich tradition, glorious history and beauty of its natural and cultural heritage. Diocletian Palace and the entire historical core of Split have been on the World Heritage UNESCO list ever since 1979, and not only for the extraordinary preservation of the Palace, but also because the Palace and its city (or the city and its Palace, if you like) continue to live a full life.
All historical layers from the old Rome, middle ages till today are still visible and alive in this structure. A walk through the ancient city takes you through time, along the great examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle, the middle aged Romanesque Church and Gothic Palace, Renaissance portals of the noblemen’s houses, Baroque facades and modern architecture superbly merged in the rich heritage.

Rovinj

Rovinj is a charmingly picturesque town with narrow, cobbled streets, striking many visitors as being very Italianate in nature. It is famous for the St Euphemia Cathedral, the highest church tower in Istria at 61 metres high. The town was originally an island, but 250 years ago the narrow channel which separated it from the mainland was filled in. It is one of our favourite destinations on the Croatian Adriatic. It is so delightfully pretty, and also lively with its numerous cafes and restaurants, galleries and an active fishing port. Pula Airport is about 25 miles/40km south of Rovinj, and before trip you can book HaloTaxi and arrange meeting with our driver at Pula Airport.
Visiting the Church of St. Euphemia (completed in 1736) is a absolute must – this is the largest Baroque building in Istria. Built according to plans by Venetian architect Giovanni Dizzi, the bell tower on the church is a copy of the one at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. At 61 metres high, it is the tallest in Istria. The tower has a statue of St. Euphemia on it which is mounted so it moves according to wind direction. There are spectacular views over the rooftops of Rovinj and to the nearby islands from the top of the bell tower. The Old Town itself is another must see, and a reflection of what Rovinj was like when it was all packed onto one crowded island. The narrow, winding, cobbled streets, crammed-together houses and buildings and picturesque squares allow you to spend a lovely afternoon.

Rab

The island of Rab is in the Bay of Kvarner around 105km from the port city of Rijeka at the foot of the Velebit mountain range. If you head for the island from Stinica by ferry, you will see the bare face of the island. The fantastic scenery surrounding the Mišnjak ferry dock will remind you of some unpopulated planet. But do not let this side of the island fool you, since Mišnjak and Kamenjak, whose steep slopes are the first thing seen by tourists arriving from the mainland, are lashed by winter sea-storms from Velebit. It is this bare hill which actually protects Rab from cold winds. Rab enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters and 2500 hours of sunshine annually. Rab is thus one of the sunniest parts of Europe.

We also cannot speak of Rab and not mention the three beautiful town parks and the quartet of bell towers which have for centuries stood guard over the town, and which differentiate it from lesser towns. As always, looking back to the past illuminates our present, and that of all the picturesque places on the island: Barbat, Banjol, Kampor, Mundanije, Palit and Supetarska Draga, which with their unique characteristics, hospitable islanders and tourist services draw in everyone who visits.

Krk Town is famous for St. Mary’s Cathedral, the seat of the Krk bishopric. Built it the 12th century, the cathedral receiving the addition of a bell tower in the 16th century. The Frankopan Castle was built over several centuries from the 12th century, and stands looking out over the sea, acting as a fortress (once upon a time) to protect against attacks from the sea. The 11th century Church of St Quirinus is unique for its two layers; the main town square, Kamplin, is named after the Latin word campus. Near Punat is the small island of Kosljun, which is home to a Franciscan Monastery. Omisalj has a number of churches, whilst the remains of a 5th century basilica is located near the town. Baska is home to the Church of St John the Baptist from the 11th century, which has a bell tower that houses the oldest bell in the area, from 1431. The Church of the Holy Trinity contains paintings from well known painters. In the Church of St Lucy (outside of Baska) the Baska Tablet was discovered – this is a tablet with the oldest dated written Croatian.

Plitvička jezera

The Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Located roughly halfway between capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, the lakes are a definite must-see in Croatia. The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometres, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometres.

There’s also quite an altitude difference – the highest point is at 1,280m, the lowest at 380m – although the total height difference between the lakes themselves is only 135m. (Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall, is 70m tall.)
Plitvice Lakes isn’t just for summer. It’s a stunning place to visit any time of year as the different seasons see the Park take on different hues, whether that’s lush greenery in spring/summer, rich colours in autumn, or magical scenes in the snow and ice in winter. Even if conditions are rainy, the park can still be wonderful to explore as the water takes on a dramatic effect – sometimes bubbling up underneath your feet on the wooden pathways.
Don't miss a chance to visit Plitvice Lakes and book HaloTaxi.

Mali lošinj

Mali Lošinj, the main center of the island of Losinj, is a cultural and social gathering of citizens.
It is mentioned for the first time at the end of the 14th century under the name of Malo Selo. 1868 is experiencing its peak. There are 11 shipyards in the town, and Mali Lošinj becomes the place with the strongest fleet in the Adriatic - even in front of Rijeka, Trieste and Venice. Since the 17th century, shipbuilding was an important economic branch in Mali Lošinj. Finding a steam engine results in stagnation of the development, and the emergence of vine disease - the peronospore results in displacement of the population.

Just place of Mali Lošinj counts two museums, the cinema in the very center of the city, during the summer season and the summer cinema that reflects the famous jazz festival during the summer months.

Trogir’s best sight is the Cathedral of St Lawrence (Katedrala sv. Lovrijenac) on which building work started in 1213 on a site where a previous cathedral once stood; the main part of the cathedral was completed in 1250. The cathedral’s bell tower was built between the 14th and 16th centuries, and can be climbed to see fantastic views from the top. A must see within the cathedral is the Chapel of St John, built in 1468, and which is considered the best Renaissance sight in Dalmatia. Part of the city walls, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, are visible today on the southern side of the city. In the middle of the city wall is the city gate, which was built in 1593. A city loggia stands near the cathedral, constructed in the 14th or 15th centuries. Over the years, it has had a number of uses, including that of a court. Within the loggia is a relief by Ivan Mestrovic. The Cipiko Palaces, opposite the cathedral, were home to the town’s noble family in the 15th century.
